Bus Shelter Modified for ADA Compliance

When I posted a few weeks ago about the new bus shelters that popped up around Kenmore, a commenter pointed out that the some of the shelters were not ADA compliant, in that they blocked so much of the sidewalk that a wheelchair would be unable to pass through.

As of today, that problem appears to have been remedied, at least at the stop I posted the photo of last month:

New Bus Shelter [Modified]

The old bus stop pole has been removed, and the signage attached to the light pole. I don’t know the specific requirements of the ADA, but there appears to be more than enough room for wheelchairs to use the sidewalk with this new configuration.

  1. 36 inches/3 feet wide is the minimum. And there are some rules about wider portions used for passing people depending on how long of a stretch of sidewalk you have, etc….. That sign was only moved because I contacted Metro. Sad if you ask me since I would assume the installers of the bus shelter should have seen how messed up they made the sidewalk clearance. But I am happy it is fixed!

  2. I remember talking to a semi-retired busdriver. He related how badly some of the “wheelchair” accessible stops were. They originally had a bus with a wheelchair stop at ever stop and then see if they could get the wheelchair safely off and away. But that took so much time and cost, they nixed it and gave a supervisor a box full of stickers and told him to “make his best guess” and label stops. So that’s why you’ll see a stop on a 20′ long, isolated, piece of sidewalk, with shear dropoffs on both ends marked as “wheelchair accessible”.
